For many people, getting dentures in Guelph can be an extremely effective solution for replacing several teeth – or even an entire set – all at once. A well-made set of dentures will last for years and can function like regular teeth in most ways.
However, dentures will still take some getting used to, and there are things you need to know to ensure your dentures give you the best experience. These are the things we always make sure to tell our patients when they’re getting dentures in Guelph.
What You Need to Know Before Getting Dentures
1 – Implant retained dentures are the way to go
Placing 3-4 implants with specialized attachments are the best way to stabilize a set of dentures, especially on the lower arch. Majority of complete lower dentures do not stay in place due to the lack of bone available. By supplementing the retention of a denture with implants, you can continue to eat many of your favourite foods.
2 – Dentures are still removable
While the technology behind dentures has come a long way in recent decades, one thing hasn’t changed: they are removable, and they will need to be removed periodically for cleaning and when you sleep.
If you dislike this prospect, permanent implants are another option.
3 – Dentures are not permanent
While it would be nice to create a single set of dentures that lasts a lifetime, that’s simply not possible. For one thing, they can get worn out and wear down, just like your normal teeth. Also, the shape of your face and jaw will change as you age, particularly as you get into your retirement years. This will slowly change the fit of dentures.
A single set will generally last between 5-10 years with proper care, but they will periodically need to be repaired or replaced. The placement of dental implants will prolong the lifespan of a denture because it will slow down the rate at which the bone resorbs and changes shape.
4 – There will be dietary changes
Dentures are great in certain situations, however it’s important to have realistic expectations. Unless you opt for implant-retained dentures, your diet will need to change with dentures. Extremely hard, crunchy and sticky foods should be avoided with dentures.
5 – Regular dental checkups are important
You’ll want to keep in close contact with your Guelph dentist after getting dentures. They will want to keep up with your progress, as well as monitoring your mouth to make sure the dentures aren’t causing any issues and doing a regular oral cancer screening.
