Dental crowns and bridges are an extremely common way of fixing – or entirely replacing – broken teeth. However, they are not a 100% perfect replacement for your natural teeth. The nature of bridges means there are extra surfaces to clean, and the possibility of problems cropping up. Once you have crowns and bridges in place, they will require some thoughtfulness and care, particularly if you want them to last as long as possible.
Since we want to see all our patients have success with their crowns and bridges, here are some key tips to avoiding problems with them!
3 Ways to Keep Your Dental Crowns and Bridges in Great Shape
1 – Clean very thoroughly around the bridge
It’s extremely easy for small amounts of food to become stuck to the extra surfaces of the bridge, particularly micro-particles making their way between the the bridge and the tooth surface beneath. If left alone, this can lead to decaying food stuck in your mouth – giving you bad breath and increasing the chances of infection.
Be sure to brush around your bridge thoroughly, floss and use mouthwash liberally. If you’re having trouble cleaning around it, talk to your dentist – there are specialty toothbrushes available to dentists that help.
2 – Wear a nightguard if it has been recommended
Many people have a tendency to clench and grind their teeth, either while awake or while asleep, or both. Clenching and grinding forces can be quite destructive to crowns, bridges, veneers, implants and even natural teeth. Faithfully wearing a nightguard (aka bruxism splint) will make everything last longer and function more effectively.
3 – Have a cleaning every six month
No matter how hard you try, there will undoubtedly be some plaque or tartar buildup around your bridge. This makes it extra important to have regular mouth cleanings at a dentist! If you visit every six months or so, your dentist will be able to ensure that your bridges and crowns remain clean and free of any debris that could cause long-term problems.
