Making Your Child's First Dental Visit Joyful
Simple tips to turn that first appointment into a positive, lifelong habit.

A child's first dental visit sets the tone for a lifetime of confident check-ups. With a little planning, it can genuinely be fun.
When to book that first visit
We recommend the first visit around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits are short, gentle, and focused on getting your child comfortable with the chair, the lights, and the friendly faces.
How to prep at home
- Read a picture book about visiting the dentist a few days beforehand.
- Practice 'counting teeth' with a toothbrush in a mirror.
- Avoid words like 'shot,' 'hurt,' or 'drill' — even in reassurance.
- Schedule the appointment mid-morning after a good breakfast and nap.

What we'll actually do
The first visit is mostly a tour. We count teeth, gently check the bite, polish with a tickly brush, and chat with parents about brushing, flossing, and diet. No needles, no drills — just a positive first impression.
“Kids who love their dentist as toddlers rarely fear the dentist as adults. That's the whole goal of visit number one.”

Building the habit
Book every six months from that first visit onward. Consistency is what makes future cleanings, X-rays, and (eventually) orthodontic consults feel completely routine.
